  • May 03, 1982 – Walt Disney Productions files a suit against Williams Electronics for infringing Disney’s Tron trademark, by the arcade video game Robotron.
  • May 05, 1992Wolfenstein 3D spawns an entire genre!
  • May 07, 1967 – Ralph Baer first tests his circuit for a simple block chase game on a standard television set.
  • May 08, 1990 – Lewis Galoob Toys introduces the Game Genie cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The Game Genie allows players of Nintendo Entertainment System games to make them easier to play.
  • May 09, 2006 – At a press conference in Los Angeles before the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo announces the release name for its next-generation console system: Wii.
  • May 10, 2000 – At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony announces initial pricing (US$299) and October 26 American launch date of the PlayStation 2.
  • May 11, 1995 – The first Electronic Entertainment Expo is held in Los Angeles, over three days. The show takes its name from Electronic Entertainment magazine. 350 game companies show 1300 games for video game systems and personal computers. Total attendance is 28,000. Sony introduces the PlayStation in a US$4 million booth, including an appearance by Michael Jackson.
  • May 11, 1995 – Sega of America begins shipping the Saturn video game system in the US. Price is US$349, or US$399 with the VirtuaFighter game. 30,000 units are available for the initial launch, with ten game titles available. Sega begins a US$50 million marketing campaign to promote the system.
  • May 11, 2004 – In Los Angeles, California, Nintendo unveils the Nintendo DS handheld video game system.
  • May 12, 1999 – Nintendo announces its next-generation console, code-named “Dolphin”. It will use a 400 MHz “Gekko” processor developed with IBM, based on the PowerPC processor.
  • May 16, 2005 – Enemy Territory: Quake Wars announced.
  • May 16, 2005 – Quake 4 For Xbox 360 announced.
  • May 16, 2005 – At Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, Sony unveils a prototype PlayStation 3 video game system.
  • May 17, 2001 - The Electronic Entertainment Expo is held in Los Angeles, California, over three days. Total attendance is 62,000. Microsoft unveils the Xbox video game system. Nintendo unveils the GameCube video game system.
  • May 17, 2003 – J.C. Padilla scores 2,181,619,994,299,256,480 on Giga Wing 2 on the Dreamcast, setting a record for the highest score on any game.
  • May 17, 2005 – Nintendo holds a press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. The company reports that two billion software titles have been sold since Nintendo entered the video game industry. Nintendo announces its online strategy for the Nintendo DS: Wi-Fi Internet connectivity with partner GameSpy.
  • May 19, 2003 – A research report by Bryan Raudenbush, an assistant professor of psychology at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, suggests that playing high-action video games reduces sensitivity to pain by distracting the player.
  • May 20, 2008 – Age of Conan is released (May 23rd in Europe).
  • May 22, 2002 – Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix released.
  • May 22, 1998 – Unreal released.
  • May 24, 1993 – Sega of America announces it will introduce, in August, a rating system for its video games: GA (general audience), MA-13 (mature, minimum age 13), and MA-17 (mature, minimum age 17).
  • May 24, 2006 – Half-Life 2: Episode One goes gold.
  • May 25, 1999 – Aliens vs. Predator released.
  • May 28, 1993 – Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Super Mario Bros. to theaters in the US. (Total American theater ticket sales: US$21 million.)
  • May 28, 2003 – 3DO announces it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US, giving the company time to find a buyer for the company.
  • May 29, 2003Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory released.
  • May 31, 1991 – At the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago, Illinois, Sony announces the Play Station video game system that can play Nintendo’s new 16-bit game cartridges, as well as games on compact disk. The Play Station system is set to cost about US$400.
  • May 31, 2001 – ION Storm Dallas shuts down.
